Killed in action, during first day of the Battle of Arras. The 3rd S.A.I. was on the right of the South African Infantry Brigade in the attack of Black Line and Blue Line (North of St Laurent-Blangy). The 3rd S.A.I. sustained 53 killed and 226 wounded
