Service History

ALIAS 1915 - 1918 Edward first joined the Border Regiment under his real name of Edward Cunningham in November 1914 and was appointed an Officers servant. He returned home on leave and deserted joining the Royal Engineers as Edward Donnelly, this was later discovered as is shown in his service record. ref Fife Military Project A form Certificate of Deserters Balance of £3/0/7 being paid on Sept, 1915 on the occasion of Edward Cunninghams desertion from the Border Regt on 27 July 1915 . An attestation form for Edward Donnelly , of 104 Bowthorn Road Cleator Moor , Service no 292063 enlisting in the Labour Coprs Royal Engineers in London on 20th August 1915 . This explains why Edward Cunningham CWG record shows that he served as Donnelly. The same attestation paper recorded on 15 Feb 1916 that ......." Having Voluntarily enlisted in the Royal Engineers whilst in a state of desertion from the Border Regt. Trial dispensed with to suffer same forfeitures and deductions as if he had been as if he had been convicted by O.C.M. G.O.C 50th Northern Division
