The attestation papers show He had 6 years service in the 3rd Battalion Border Regiment ( expired) him as discharged from military service on 6/11/1914 Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal The London Gazette Publication date: 17 July 1917 Supplement: 30188 Page: 7270 Award: Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) Date Of Award: 18/07/1917 Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advance he entered an enemy dug-out and captured two officers and thirty-seven other ranks. Throughout the operations he rendered most valuable servioes.
