Battalion War Diary Extract

The 9th Battalion Border regiment was formed in June 1940 as a holding unit providing replacements for existing territorial battalions It was made up f Territorials Reserves and some regulars but mostly men newly drafted aged 25 to 27 .
After two years on home service the 9th Battalion was designated in 1942 as an efficient Service Battalion and was selected to Serve overseas

In August of that year they arrived in Calcutta and in early 1943 were allocated to the 17th Indian light division who for most of that year were fighting the enemy in the mountains of Burma
Early in 1944 the Japanese attacked the main Railway in NE India at Imphal and it was here the the 9th Borders fought for months , engaging in heavy fighting before seeing off the Japanese attacks later that year . Pursuing them into Burma in late 1944 into 1945 ; signalling the start of the end of the Far east campaign
